My journey in eye care began in a village, long before I ever set foot in a showroom. My grandfather, Noris
Appuhamy, helped people whose eyes were troubled. It was voluntary work, and he never accepted any benefit from
his patients. To me, he was a hero. He made eye drops from special herbal leaves, and his treatment gave relief
to so many that my father followed him into the same field, and it spread to a few more villages.
I wanted to carry that service forward for my own generation. So I returned to Colombo, where I had studied, and
started as a technician in a small optical workshop in Slave Island. There I learned the craft and gained
experience in the showroom too. Gradually, my training continued under Dr. Anandarajan (FRCS), who guided me to
become an optometrist in 1985. His professional training made me what I am today.
In 1990, I opened The Optician, where I have enjoyed my life as a senior optometrist ever since. I still look
forward to serving the people of Sri Lanka with all my knowledge. I teach my co-workers to treat our customers
like their own family, and even when the result is not what I had hoped for, I carry the responsibility of
upholding the quality of our service.
